The International Cassiopea Workshop aims to create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages open dialogue and exchange of scientific ideas. Participants are expected to treat others with kindness, respect, and consideration, valuing intellectual openness. By adhering to the following principles, we aim to ensure that our events are conducive to learning, collaboration, and discourse.
Expected Behavior: Participants are expected to treat others with respect and consideration, and to act in a professional manner. Discussions among participants should be respectful and directed at ideas, not other participants. Participants are also expected to report harassing or discriminating behavior they witness. Participants in lab tutorial settings are also expected to behave in a safe manner and follow laboratory safety protocols, including wearing appropriate PPE. We do not tolerate illegal and unprofessional behavior with regard to the conference site.
In the interest of open academic discussion at the conference, participants should seek permission from presenters before sharing material presented at the conference by others.
Prohibition of Harassment and Discrimination: Harassment, intimidation, and discrimination in any form are strictly prohibited. This includes but is not limited to unwelcome physical contact, sexual advances, derogatory comments, and any behavior that demeans or offends others. We expect attendees to educate themselves and be mindful of others’ lived experiences. There may be times when a participant causes discomfort to others without intending to. We believe that unintended actions must still be addressed and rectified.
Encouragement of Open and Honest Intellectual Debate: We encourage rigorous analysis and respectful critique, allowing for the robust exchange of scientific ideas while maintaining professionalism and respect for all participants. However, we expect all discussions and debates to remain professional, constructive, respectful and polite.
Responsibility to Report Unacceptable Behavior: Participants are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings and fellow attendees, reporting any dangerous situations or individuals in distress. Participants may speak with any member on the ICW Conflict Resolution Committee or any of our nominated ombudspersons about any concerns encountered at the workshop. Offenders may be given a warning, asked to attend the remainder of the workshop remotely or barred from participation in the workshop without refund or compensation.
